LESION IN SENSORY SYSTEM

LESIONS

CAUSES

MANIFESTATIONS

Peripheral nerve

A)Mononeuropathy

Lesion of one peripheral nerve

Loss of all sensation supplied by it

B)polyneuropathy

Lesion of all peripheral nerves
    - diabetic
 - peripheral neuritis

Loss of all sensation
-GLOVE AND STOCKING LOSS

C)Herpes Zoster

Herpes virus infect DRG

irritation of pain afferent
migrate toward peripheral axon
=rash +vesicular formation

Spinal cord

A)Tabes Dorsalis

Neurosyphilitic
Attack dorsal root center to DRG

Atrophy of Dorsal column
=loss fine touch,vibration,proprioceptive
~SENSORY ATAXIA

B)Syringomyelia

Widening of central canal
Damage spinothalamic tract

Loss pain,temp,crude touch
=JACKET LOSS (normally cervical region is affected)

C)Brown Sequard Syndrome

Hemisection of spinal cord

At level of lesion
=sensory:loss all sensation
=motor   :loss all reflexes(LMNL)

Below level of lesion
=same side:loss the dorsal column sensation + UMNL in motor reflex
=oppose side:loss the spinothalamic tract sensation only

Thalamic
Thalamic Syndrome

Complete sensory loss in opposite side

Cortical

Sensory cortex lesion

Loss of:
Fine touch
Stereognosis
Proprioceptive sensation
Pressure

Amorphosynthesis

Damage to the somatic sensation on one side

Loss ability to recognize complex object
Disturbance of body image
